Ghana’s Communications and Digitalization Minister, Sam George, has summoned Electronic Money Issuers (EMIs) for an emergency meeting amid a troubling rise in mobile money fraud.
Addressing the issue in an interview on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday, the Minister described the surge in fraud cases as “unacceptable” and pledged immediate corrective action.
Originally scheduled for Thursday, the meeting was postponed at the request of the EMIs until after the Easter holidays. The agenda will centre on enhancing consumer protection, enforcing digital security standards, and demanding accountability from operators in the mobile money ecosystem.

“There will be consequences for platforms that are not doing enough to safeguard the funds of their users,” Sam George emphasized, underlining the government’s resolve to shield Ghanaians from digital financial crimes.
He also signalled potential regulatory reforms, stating that legal amendments are on the table if that’s what it takes to enforce stricter compliance in the sector.
“The government will not sit idle while Ghanaians lose their money to digital criminals,” he stated, while urging the public to stay alert and report suspicious activities.

As mobile money becomes central to financial inclusion in Ghana, this move, if successful, marks a significant effort by the government to maintain trust in digital finance and ensure user safety.
