A widespread internet disruption linked to infrastructure provider Cloudflare on Tuesday caused outages across several major websites, including social media platform X.
According to outage tracker Downdetector, thousands of users began reporting access issues shortly after 11:30 GMT, signalling a large-scale service interruption affecting multiple regions.
Cloudflare acknowledged the problem in a status update at 11:48 UTC, stating “Cloudflare is aware of, and investigating an issue which potentially impacts multiple customers.” The company added,”Further detail will be provided as more information becomes available.”
In a post shared on X during the disruption, Cloudflare raised concerns about site accessibility in parts of Europe, saying: “Has your website been hit with unexpected unavailability in Spain? Help us find out why. Download the free OONI Probe app, enter the URL in the app and tap ‘Run.’ Your results are anonymous and help measure blocking of websites in your region.”
Cloudflare provides essential infrastructure for millions of websites, including cybersecurity solutions and traffic-management tools designed to keep platforms running during high-volume surges. Disruptions affecting the company often lead to cascading outages across the internet.
For e-commerce platforms, digital service providers, and media companies, the outage meant temporary loss of access for customers, and reduced visibility across search and social platforms. Businesses relying on platform X for marketing, customer engagement or real-time updates are unable to reach audiences during peak activity periods.
The incident also exposes the operational risk of heavy dependence on single-point infrastructure providers. Even short outages can lead to revenue loss, service downtime, customer frustration, and delays in digital operations, especially for businesses whose services require continuous uptime.

The cause of outage remains under investigation, with Cloudflare expected to release further updates as diagnostics continue.
