The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, has described the Cedi as a mirror of Ghana’s national journey, one marked by courage, trials, and resilience.
Speaking at the official launch of the Cedi @ 60 anniversary at the Accra International Conference Centre, Dr. Asiama said the celebration is not merely a look back at history, but a moment of reflection on how far the nation has come in shaping its economic destiny.
“The story of the Cedi is the story of Ghana itself, bold, tested, and unyielding in the pursuit of progress,” he said.
The Governor recalled the currency’s evolution since its introduction in July 1965, from the replacement of the Ghanaian pound to the redenominations of 1967 and 2007, and the continuous integration of advanced security and design features. Each stage, he said, reflects Ghana’s adaptability and innovation in the face of global and domestic challenges.
He noted that the Cedi, once battered by inflation and depreciation, has in recent months shown renewed strength, supported by strong policy coordination and fiscal discipline. Inflation has declined to 9.4% as of September 2025, while the Cedi has appreciated by 37% year-to-date.
“Our economy was tested, but it did not break. These gains are the result of hard, sometimes unpopular, but principled decisions,” Dr. Asiama stated.
He emphasized that the Bank of Ghana remains committed to safeguarding price stability, strengthening the financial system, and supporting sustainable growth. The Cedi @ 60 celebrations, he said, will span a year and include exhibitions, public lectures, and educational outreach programs to reconnect citizens with the currency’s heritage and meaning.
“When we celebrate the Cedi, we celebrate our journey toward economic self-reliance and national confidence,” he concluded.
