Nigerian cross-dresser and social media personality, Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky, has been released from the Kirikiri Correctional Centre after serving a six-month sentence. Bobrisky was convicted for abusing naira notes by spraying them at parties, a practice that is considered illegal in Nigeria.
Bobrisky’s legal troubles began when he was seen in several viral videos spraying naira notes at various events. This practice, although common in Nigerian celebrations, is considered an abuse of the national currency. Authorities were quick to respond, and Bobrisky was arrested and charged with the offence.
On April 12, 2024, Justice Abimbola Awogboro sentenced Bobrisky to six months imprisonment without the option of a fine. The sentence was intended to serve as a deterrent to others who might consider disrespecting the nation’s currency. During his time in custody, Bobrisky was held at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre, a facility known for housing both minor and serious offenders.
Upon his release, Bobrisky appeared in a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), where he was seen with actress Eniola Ajao. In the video, Bobrisky expressed excitement over his return and reflected on his time in prison.
In an interview with GoldMyneTV, Bobrisky issued a stern warning to Nigerians: “Don’t spray money, unless you want to become a landlord in Kirikiri. It’s not just about serious crimes; even a minor offense like this can land you in prison.” He emphasized the importance of respecting the naira and adhering to the law to avoid similar repercussions.
Bobrisky also expressed gratitude to his friends and supporters who stood by him during his incarceration. He urged Nigerians to learn from his experience and to obey the law to avoid unnecessary legal troubles.
Bobrisky’s release and his subsequent public appearances have reignited discussions on the legal and cultural implications of spraying money at social events. His case serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting national symbols and adhering to the laws of the land.
