Ghana is set to revolutionize its public transportation system with the introduction of electric buses, an initiative spearheaded by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has confirmed that the electric buses are en route to Ghana and are expected to slash transportation costs by 40%. This initiative is part of the government’s broader effort to provide sustainable transport solutions and ease the financial burden on commuters.
The new buses are designed to address several challenges plaguing the country’s transportation system. They will reduce the reliance on diesel, help alleviate traffic congestion, and significantly curb pollution levels in urban areas. With zero tailpipe emissions, the electric buses also align with global efforts to combat climate change while enhancing the overall commuting experience for Ghanaians, offering modern amenities and quieter rides.

As part of a pilot phase, the electric buses will be rolled out initially in Greater Accra. Dr. Bawumia has indicated that the project will start with an initial fleet of 100 buses, with plans to expand nationwide once the system proves effective. This phased approach will allow authorities to address potential logistical challenges and fine-tune the implementation strategy.
This move is a strategic step toward a cleaner and more efficient public transport system. Passengers will not only benefit from lower costs but will also experience faster and more reliable service. Experts have also praised the initiative for its long-term potential to reduce Ghana’s carbon footprint and dependency on fossil fuels.
Kofi Ofosu Nkansah further emphasized that electric buses come with minimal maintenance requirements and will operate without fuel costs, which is expected to play a crucial role in keeping transportation fares low. This cost efficiency is critical as Ghanaians continue to grapple with high fuel prices and inflation, which have driven up the cost of public transportation in recent years.
According to Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, the electric bus initiative is a timely and transformative project that holds promise for both the environment and the economy. With its rollout scheduled for the end of this year, Ghanaians can look forward to a more affordable and sustainable public transport experience.
