As the world prepares for COP29, MTN Ghana has launched its inaugural Sustainability Week, underscoring the company’s commitment to aligning with global climate action. This initiative is part of MTN Group’s broader Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework, which emphasizes reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting diversity, and extending rural broadband access.
MTN Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita reiterated the importance of ESG in achieving their “Ambition 2025” strategy, which includes a 47% reduction in emissions by 2030, achieving Net Zero by 2040, and ensuring gender equality across the workforce by 2030. To drive this commitment, MTN has linked senior executive compensation to these ESG targets, making environmental and social responsibility a core focus of its corporate strategy.
MTN Ghana’s Sustainability Week, themed “Sustainability: Our Collective Responsibility,” kicked off with the unveiling of the company’s first electric car and motorbike at MTN House, marking a significant milestone in their efforts to minimize their carbon footprint. CEO Stephen Blewett emphasized the importance of sustainability for future generations and encouraged employees to embrace practices that align with MTN’s ESG mission.

Throughout the week, MTN Ghana will engage employees and stakeholders through activities such as “Lunch and Learn” sessions, “Eco Talks,” and “Bright Conversations,” designed to foster a deeper understanding of sustainability and its role in the company’s operations. These initiatives are set to drive MTN’s broader environmental goals while ensuring the company continues to make a positive impact on society.
Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, highlighted that Sustainability Week is a crucial part of the company’s Ambition 2025 vision. She noted that MTN’s sustainability vision is focused on creating shared value through responsible ESG practices. By aligning with global climate goals ahead of COP29, MTN Ghana is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable development, with efforts aimed at bridging the digital divide, advancing social responsibility, and promoting a more sustainable future for all.
COP29, which will take place from November 11 to 22 in Baku, Azerbaijan, will see global leaders and stakeholders discussing climate change strategies, particularly in areas like climate finance and emissions reduction. MTN Ghana’s Sustainability Week serves as a timely demonstration of the company’s commitment to global environmental goals and its role in addressing pressing climate issues.
