Andy Murray, three-time Grand Slam Champion has confirmed his withdrawal from the men’s singles competition at Paris 2024 Olympics, attributing the reason for the withdrawal to recovery issues from injury.
The tennis sensation is however still going to participate alongside Dan Evans in the doubles, which will be his final tournament to play. Murray expressed disappointment in his inability to compete in the singles, the Grand Slam Champion has lots of fond memories of his experiences at the Olympics, particularly of triumphs in London.
“The Olympics has been incredibly special for me, I’m happy I get to do this one more time. It’s unfortunate. I trained to get ready to play both, but I’m getting a bit older now so it gets harder to recover from injuries. I ran out of time”
The 37-year-old has had a series of injuries, including a back issue which forced him to back out of his second-round match at Queen’s in June, which will now be remembered as his final singles match of his career.
Murray and Evans will face Taro Daniel and Kei Nishikari of Japan in the first round.
The draw has also set up a potential showdown between long-time rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, should they advance from their opening matches.
Murray’s retirement at the end of his fifth Olympics marks the end of an era in tennis. Fans will be eager to see him compete one last time in Paris, alongside Evans, as he draws the curtain down on an incredible career.
