The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has initiated a decongestion exercise across key commercial areas, including Tudu, Makola, Kantamanto, and their environs. The initiative, led by AMA Chief Executive Officer Michael Kpakpo Allotey, aims to clear pavements and roads of unauthorized traders to enhance pedestrian safety, ensure emergency access, and support the government’s 24-hour economy agenda.
During the exercise, Mr. Allotey engaged directly with traders, urging them to vacate unauthorized trading spots and relocate to designated market areas.
He emphasized that the operation is not a one-day event but will continue for two weeks, covering additional areas such as Kaneshie Market, Rawlings Park, and other parts of the Central Business District.
“This exercise is essential to ensure that our roads and pavements are free for pedestrians and emergency services,” Mr. Allotey said.
“It’s also a critical step in preparing Accra for the 24-hour economy, which will provide enhanced security and trading opportunities for businesses operating at all hours.”
The AMA has assured traders that the 24-hour economy initiative will include measures such as improved lighting and security to facilitate safe nighttime trading.
Mr. Allotey also called on traders to comply with AMA regulations and fulfill their tax obligations, noting that compliance is crucial for the success of the initiative.
While some traders expressed concerns about the impact on their livelihoods, others have appealed to the government to provide alternative trading spaces for those displaced by the exercise.
The AMA has indicated that discussions are ongoing to identify and allocate appropriate areas for such traders.
The decongestion exercise is part of a broader effort to transform Accra into a cleaner, safer, and more organized city, aligning with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision for a 24-hour economy.
The AMA has reiterated its commitment to engaging stakeholders throughout the process to ensure a smooth transition and minimal disruption to economic activities.
