Airtel Malawi Plc has officially launched Africa’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered Spam Alert Service, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at protecting customers from fraudulent SMS messages and strengthening digital security nationwide.
The new service delivers real-time alerts for suspected spam messages and is available to all Airtel Malawi subscribers, including users of both smartphones and feature phones. The launch positions Malawi amongst the list of African nations driving AI digital protection efforts on the continent.
The AI-driven platform is designed to proactively identify and flag suspicious SMS activity before it reaches users, aiming to significantly reduce instances of phishing, scams, and other forms of digital fraud. Its rollout ensures broader protection across Malawi’s mobile network, regardless of device type, and is a direct response to rising concerns over digital fraud in the region.
The event was attended by Airtel Malawi Managing Director Aashish Dutt, Minister of Information & Digitalisation Moses Kunkuyu, and Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) Director General Daud Suleman, underscoring the importance of collaboration between the private sector and government in combating digital threats.
“This service is more than just technology, it’s a promise to our customers that their safety and trust are our top priorities,” said Aashish Dutt, Managing Director of Airtel Malawi Plc. The initiative sets a new standard for cybersecurity on the continent.
