The Accra West region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has successfully recovered 3.3GWh of power, valued at GH₵7,411,462.00, following a crackdown on illegal electricity connections.
The recovery was made during a three-month pilot revenue protection exercise conducted between September and December 2024, during which 374 customers were caught engaging in illegal activities.
Speaking at a media engagement, Mr. Emmanuel Ankrah, Acting General Manager of ECG Accra West, revealed that a special task force had been set up to audit meters and electrical connections to curb commercial losses and recover lost revenue.
He warned that customers found guilty of illegal connections would face disconnection, surcharges, and legal action.
“Customers are advised to desist from conniving with self-styled ECG workers or electricians who tamper with meters and engage in illegal connections,” he cautioned.
Mr. Ankrah stressed that such illegal activities deprived ECG of vital revenue, ultimately affecting the quality of electricity services provided to the public.
“If you have engaged in an illegal connection, we will find you, recover the full value of the stolen power, and apply penalties,” he warned.
Dr. Mark Owusu Ansah, Accra West Revenue Protection Manager, emphasized the gravity of power theft and reiterated the task force’s commitment to tackling the issue.
However, since October 2024, 56 cases have been taken to court, with 46 resolved and 10 still ongoing.
The identified illegal activities included, Direct service connections, Meter bypasses, Meter tampering and Unauthorized connections.
The Accra West ECG region comprises eight operational districts: Ablekuma, Achimota, Amasaman, Bortianor, Dansoman, Kaneshie, Korle-Bu, and Nsawam.
