The Takoradi Port has achieved a significant milestone, recording a 33.28% increase in cargo volumes and vessel traffic, according to its Director, Peter Amo-Bediako.
Speaking on the port’s performance, Mr. Amo-Bediako revealed that cargo volumes rose from 7.1 million metric tonnes in November 2023 to 9.4 million metric tonnes by November 2024. Similarly, the port saw a 100% rise in cruise ship calls, increasing from seven vessels in 2023 to 14 in 2024.
Import volumes also saw a notable uptick, climbing by 11.03% to 2,877,273 metric tonnes in 2024, compared to 2,591,340 metric tonnes in 2023. Clinker and gypsum imports accounted for over 70% of the total, with combined volumes growing from 1,757,883 metric tonnes in 2023 to 2,072,490 metric tonnes in 2024.
Export volumes experienced even more remarkable growth, surging by 44% to reach 6,472,998 metric tonnes in 2024, up from 4,500,570 metric tonnes in the previous year. Additionally, transit cargo volumes increased exponentially, reaching 51,086 metric tonnes in 2024 compared to just 2,247 metric tonnes in 2023.
However, the Director noted a decline in Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) container traffic, which dropped by 11% from 31,763 TEUs in 2023 to 28,257 TEUs in 2024.
Despite this, Mr. Amo-Bediako highlighted the port’s overall achievements as a testament to its commitment to operational excellence and customer satisfaction. The growth, he said, underscores the port’s pivotal role in driving trade and economic activity in Ghana and the region. The Takoradi Port has achieved a significant milestone, recording a 33.28% increase in cargo volumes and vessel traffic, according to its Director, Peter Amo-Bediako.
